Highpoint elevation 12,800 ft.
Engineer Pass is way up there—nearly 13,000 ft, with a narrow, rocky, sometimes-scary one-lane trail. Definitely not for the faint-of-heart, but well worth the trip in our tour vehicle with one of our experienced drivers—or a rental Jeep if you’re brave enough. Part of the seasonal Alpine Loop Scenic Byway, this rugged trail will take you past the historic Mickey Breen and San Juan Chief Mines to Oh Point! at the top of the world! We start with Corkscrew Pass and Lake Como, visit the ghost town of Animas Forks and after summiting Engineer Pass, return via Silverton, where we have a lunch stop—and a chance to visit one of Silverton’s legendary restaurants.
Hard to believe, but Engineer Pass was once a stage-coach route and a common trail for back-country mountain preachers who spread the gospel in Silverton, Ouray, and Lake City. it’s still used as a local’s ‘shortcut’ between Lake City and Silverton.
Box lunch available for $12.95 on specialty tours over 5 hours.
