Highpoint elevation 11,50000 ft.
This tour climbs above Ouray and ascends Lower Engineer Pass to the Mineral Point and the San Juan Chief Mill. Part of the seasonal Alpine Loop Scenic Byway, this rugged trail will take you past the historic Mickey Breen and other historic mines. Hard to believe, but this was once part of a stage-coach route and a common trail for back-country mountain preachers who spread the gospel in Silverton, Ouray, and Lake City. The Alpine Loop, incorporating Engineer Pass, is still used as a local’s ‘shortcut’ between Lake City and Silverton.

At the height of the mining, Ouray had more than 30 active mines. The Chief Ouray Mine, like the town itself, was named after Chief Ouray of the Utes, a Native American tribe.
