Corkscrew Gulch Tour
Half Day Tour | $65 Adult |$35 Children 5-12
Highpoint elevation, 12,730 ft
Corkscrew Gulch. From Ouray , we follow Hwy 550 to the turnoff at Red Mountain Pass, 11,000 ft, then climb the saddle between Red Mountain One and Two. The scenery is breathtaking. This original route was built to connect the Red Mountain Mining District towns and mines with Ouray and Silverton. Due to the steep and unforgiving terrain of the Uncompahgre Gorge, rails from Silverton only reached as far as the Corkscrew Turntable above Red Mountain Town. From there, the only passage to Ouray was by wagon road. This is a popular tour to view fall foliage as you wind through dense Aspen forests with occasional glimpses of the valley below. We return via Hurricane Pass, 12,730 ft, with and the ghost town at the Ironton Townsite.
